We have an 8 year old female Bernese Mt. Dog who has has been diagnosed with both Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) and megaesophagus. We have questions that we believe are related to both conditions. Regarding her degenerative myelopathy, she has a difficulty controlling her bowels for some time and recently has been experiencing difficulties with controlling her bladder as well. The latter is much more of a problem than the former. Are you aware of any diapers for dogs that will deal with urination but not the bowel movements. Any diapers that caught the bowel movements would require significant trimming of for a ride her hind quarters which we would prefer not to do unless necessary. Her megaesophagus has become much worse of late and she is now vomiting several times a day. Sometimes these are just mucous from the esophagus, but others are a combination of her food and the mucous. We have had to take her to the vet twice in the last month. On the first occasion she actually had become dehydrated while on the second one week to occur in early to avoid that. On each occasion her vet has given her Zantac and Polyfex, IM, and also injected saline subcutaneously. She's also been given prescriptions for Famotidine, Flagyl and Simplicef. Last month it seemed to help but this month less so. We have taken to feeding her multiple small meals each day and now feed her with her front paws elevated up on an ottoman. We are also pounding on her rib cage and chest in an effort to try and get the food to pass out of her esophagus into her stomach. We were wondering if you had any suggestions or anything else that we, or our vet could do to reduce her vomiting. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
