breathing

I have a cat that is almost 13 years old and she has been breathing funny for a long time. I mentioned this to my vet back in the summer and she thought maybe it was because it was hot. She is still breathing hard and I took her in to the vet and they thought she might have asthma. Gave me some prednisolone tablets for her but she got diarhea so I stopped them. She is losing weight I think but still eating, not coughing or sneezing. Not as active as she used to be. Talked to the vet about cutting the pill in half and trying again. Is there some way to tell if she has something else. Should I ash about getting a blood test or x-ray etc. The vet did mention that the pills usually don't do that and that she could give a shot in the muscle for asthma if that is what it is. What do you think my next course of action should be? I'm not sure what to do for her.
